EXCEL4MED presents innovative pomegranate seeds valorisation at the 39th EFFoST International Conference

EXCEL4MED

The EXCEL4MED project participated in the 39th EFFoST International Conference 2025, held on 17-19 November 2025 in Porto (Portugal).

This unmissable event, where we have been sharing our results year after year, is key for sharing advances in food science and technology with the international scientific community.

Our work was presented by our partner Fotios Lytras (from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), who represented EXCEL4MED and disseminated our findings to a broad scientific audience.

New EXCEL4MED scientific poster

Fotios presented the EXCEL4MED poster “Advanced Pulsed Electric Fields in Agro-Industrial By-Product Valorisation: Unlocking the Phenolics’ Recovery from Pomegranate Seeds, focused on innovative strategies to valorise agro-industrial side streams.

The study, conducted by our partners the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Malta and ELGO-DIMITRA, explores how Pulsed Electric Fields (PEF) can serve as a non-thermal, environmentally friendly technology to enhance the extraction of valuable polyphenols from pomegranate seeds.

This approach demonstrates the potential to transform food industry by-products into high-value compounds, supporting sustainable and circular food processing.

Methodology and key findings

Our research combined RSM-based optimisation, UHPLC-QTOF-MS profiling, and comprehensive chemical analysis.

The results show that PEF treatment can significantly increase polyphenol recovery while reducing energy consumption, highlighting a greener and more efficient method for by-product valorisation in food processing.
