Six work packages cover the project from planning to public outreach
A project that turns fruit by-products into food people want to eat needs more than good science. It needs a clear plan, a real market, partners who work well together and a public that knows what is happening. EXCEL4MED organises its work into six work packages. Each has its own focus and its own team, and each feeds into the next.
WP1
Management
Keeps the project on time, on budget and in line with European Commission rules, coordinates the partners across all activities and sets out how project data are handled.
WP2
Cross-border joint R&I strategy aligned with strategic priorities
Explores how people buy, eat and waste food, finds what holds back innovation in fruit value chains and reviews existing business models. Living Labs give stakeholders an open, shared space to improve how value chains are organised and governed.
WP3
Joint R&I project consolidating academia-business linkages
Creates new added-value food products from pomegranate, citrus and their by-products using green extraction methods, and develops green technologies to convert juice sugars.
WP4
Action and investment plan for implementation of the strategy
Tests whether there is a market for the technologies and the products and services built on them: who the customers are, where they are, how strong the competition is, and which regulatory, tax and readiness barriers stand in the way.
WP5
Conceptual design and pre-planning for pilots and demonstrators
Runs pilot-scale trials of each technology in the citrus and pomegranate supply chains and their distribution networks, and recommends better policy tools to encourage green technologies in the Mediterranean food chain.
WP6
Accompanying measure – dissemination
Carries out outreach and communication, and develops training that moves knowledge between sectors.
