The Project
The EXCEL4MED project, funded by the EU, aims to strengthen innovation ecosystems in the Mediterranean region's agricultural sector. It focuses on producing nutritious food products and maximizing the use of food industrial by-products. The project aims to foster collaboration between Greece, Malta, and France to enhance the region's food value chains. Ultimately, the goal is to promote sustainable growth in the Mediterranean agricultural industry.

The overarching objective of EXCEL4MED is to create an Excellence Hub in Mediterranean fruit supply chains. The project aims to identify high-impact strategies and establish lines of resilience for producers, processors, consumers and policymakers. This will be achieved considering agility, adaptability, and alignment within the four domains of business, collaboration, sourcing, and knowledge management.Overall, EXCEL4MED will propose an adaptive capability in the Mediterranean supply chain to prepare for novel waste valorisation strategies, production of added value fruit products following a holistic commerce, and the implementation of green innovative technological methodologies within a Quadruple Helix concept. EXCEL4MED will develop and demonstrate the solution in Mediterranean high-value perishable food supply chains: pomegranate and citrus fruits.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The EXCEL4MED project aims to strengthen research and innovation in Malta and Greece, reduce disparities in the EU, and support the food industry. It will focus on small-scale producers and engage stakeholders, academia, and business for technology transfer and entrepreneurship training. The project also seeks to promote knowledge sharing and collaboration for transformative changes in Europe.

The session, titled “Writing and participating in funded research programmes”, gathered students and early-career researchers interested in stepping into the world of EU research projects.
Our partner Thanos Karvounis (Smart Agro Hub) presented EXCEL4MED as an example of a successful Horizon Europe project, showing how collaborative research can translate into tangible impact in the agri-food sector.
