Hands-on science returns to San Anton School: EXCEL4MED inspires students on food waste innovation

EXCEL4MED

On 9 April 2025, EXCEL4MED returned to San Anton School in Malta for a second round of interactive science engagement, this time with a new group of students eager to discover how innovation can transform food waste into valuable resources!

Led by our partners Diana Miceli, from Koperattivi Malta, and Prof. Ruben Gatt, from the University of Malta, the session introduced students to the core objectives of EXCEL4MED through a series of practical experiments and discussions.

The aim? To show how science and innovation can turn food waste into valuable resources, and how young minds can be part of the solution.

From waste to value: science in action

This second visit continued the project’s mission to bring science closer to young learners, focusing on how circular economy strategies and green technologies can convert agri-food by-products, such as citrus and pomegranate waste, into functional ingredients for new food products.

Students participated in hands-on activities that linked directly to the research being carried out within EXCEL4MED.

Our partners gave them the opportunity to learn how everyday food waste can be repurposed to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability.

Moreover, engaging with a scientist outside the classroom sparked lively discussions and inspired many to consider how science and innovation intersect with their daily lives.

According to the class teacher, the session was once again a highlight of the scholastic year, offering a memorable opportunity for students to meet and learn from active researchers.

Strengthening education through collaboration

The return visit was made possible through the continued collaboration between San Anton School, Koperattivi Malta, the University of Malta’s Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition and, of course, the EXCEL4MED project consortium.

Together, we are committed to nurturing awareness around sustainable practices and encouraging youth participation in shaping a greener future.
