The 10th International Conference Mikrobiokosmos, held on 30 November-2 December 2023 at Divani Palace Larissa Hotel (Greece), provided EXCEL4MED with an excellent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration in the field of microbiology and biotechnology.
Among the key networking highlights was the discussion between Prof. Vasilis Valdramidis, coordinator of EXCEL4MED, and Giorgos Markou, coordinator of AquaTech4Feed.
Their exchange of ideas paved the way for potential synergies between the two projects, both of which focus on sustainable innovations in food and aquaculture.
Exploring innovation in sustainable aquaculture
AquaTech4Feed is a pioneering project developing novel, sustainable fish feed using alternative protein sources such as algae, duckweed, insects, and microbiomes (bioflocs).
By utilising aquaculture wastewater and waste streams, the project is creating an eco-friendly, closed-loop production system that enhances fish health and production efficiency.
To ensure biosafety and high-quality feed, AquaTech4Feed integrates advanced technologies and feeding trials with key species like lumpfish, salmon, and sea bream, defining benchmarks for sustainable fish farming.
With EXCEL4MED’s focus on biotechnology, food waste valorisation, and Mediterranean fruit supply chains, and AquaTech4Feed’s advancements in circular aquaculture technologies, the projects share a common goal of promoting sustainability and resource efficiency in food production.
These interactions are crucial for cross-sector innovation, paving the way for future collaboration between the food and aquaculture industries!
