In May 2025, the EXCEL4MED project strengthened its outreach efforts by engaging with students in Malta through two impactful school visits.
Organised in collaboration with the Malta Food Agency and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, these sessions aimed to inspire young learners to think critically about sustainability, innovation and responsible resource use.
These activities align with EXCEL4MED’s wider mission to promote sustainable food systems and foster behavioural change at all levels of society, including the next generation.
9 May 2025 – EXCEL4MED visit to St. Edward’s College
The first school visit took place on 9 May 2025 at St. Edward’s College, where Alistair Grima, from the Malta Chamber of Commerce, and Emma Cutajar, from the Malta Food Agency, delivered an interactive session to students.
Key topics included food waste prevention, responsible consumption and how everyday decisions can support a more circular and sustainable society.
Students were encouraged to think about how innovation can help tackle environmental challenges, and how simple actions —like reusing food or recycling packaging— can have a meaningful impact.
26 May 2025 – EXCEL4MED visit to St Thomas More College, Tarxien Primary School
The second visit, on 26 May 2025, targeted Year 6 students at St Thomas More College – Tarxien Primary School.
This session focused on sustainable food practices, environmental awareness and the importance of reducing food waste from a young age.
Students explored the journey of food, from farm to plate (and beyond) and learned how food waste can be repurposed through science and technology.
These school visits form part of EXCEL4MED‘s broader community engagement strategy.
Involving local schools reinforces the idea that everyone, regardless of age, has a role to play in shaping more resilient food systems across the Mediterranean.
